Laptop Black Screen? 7 Fixes That Actually Work
Your laptop turns on but the screen stays black? Here are 7 fixes from simple to advanced that resolve this issue.
Is the Laptop Actually On?
First, check if the power LED is lit, if you can hear the fan spinning, or if the keyboard backlight is on. If none of these signs are present, this is a power issue, not a display issue. Try a different charger or remove the battery and plug in AC power only.
Fix 1: Force Restart
Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds until the laptop completely shuts off. Wait 10 seconds, then press the power button again. This clears the hardware state and resolves many black screen issues caused by a frozen display driver.
Fix 2: Hard Reset (Drain Residual Power)
Unplug the charger, remove the battery if possible, then hold the power button for 30 seconds. This drains all residual electrical charge from the motherboard. Reconnect power and turn on. This fixes black screens caused by static charge buildup, which is more common than people think.
Fix 3: Connect an External Monitor
Plug in an external monitor or TV via HDMI. If the external display works, your laptop screen or its cable is the problem. This narrows it down to a hardware issue with the screen itself, the backlight, or the display cable connecting the screen to the motherboard.
Fix 4: Brightness Key
It sounds too simple, but the brightness may have been turned all the way down. Press the brightness up key (usually Fn + a function key with a sun icon) multiple times. On some laptops, accidentally pressing the wrong key combo can set brightness to zero.
Fix 5: Boot into Safe Mode
If you see the Windows logo briefly before the screen goes black, the issue is likely a display driver. Force restart 3 times in a row to trigger Windows Recovery. From there, go to Troubleshoot, Advanced Options, Startup Settings, and enable Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, uninstall the most recent display driver update.
Fix 6: Reseat the RAM
If your laptop allows access to RAM, power off completely, remove the RAM sticks, clean the contacts with an eraser, and reseat them firmly. Loose RAM is a surprisingly common cause of black screens, especially after a drop or bump.
