How Long Can a Dog Go Without Eating?

A healthy adult dog can go 3 to 5 days without food without serious medical consequences, though this is not recommended. Puppies, small breeds, senior dogs, and dogs with existing health conditions can develop dangerous low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) within 24 hours of not eating. As a general rule, if your adult dog skips one meal, monitor but do not panic. If they skip two consecutive meals (24 hours), start trying the home remedies below. If they have not eaten for 48 hours, contact your veterinarian. If a puppy under 6 months skips even one meal, contact your vet because puppies are much more vulnerable to blood sugar drops.

Reason 1 to 3: Behavioral Causes

Reason 1: Picky eating. Some dogs learn that if they refuse their regular food, they get something better. This is especially common in dogs that receive a lot of table scraps or treats. The fix is to offer the regular food for 15 minutes, then remove it. Offer nothing else until the next meal time. A healthy picky dog will eat within 1 to 2 meals when they realize nothing better is coming. Reason 2: Stress or environmental changes. Moving to a new home, a new family member, a new pet, loud construction, thunderstorms, or schedule changes can suppress appetite. This usually resolves within 2 to 3 days as the dog adjusts. Reason 3: Recent vaccination. Mild appetite loss for 24 to 48 hours after vaccinations is normal and not a cause for concern.

Reason 4 to 6: Food-Related Causes

Reason 4: Stale or spoiled food. Dry kibble loses freshness after the bag has been open for 4 to 6 weeks. Check the expiration date and smell the food. If it smells rancid or stale, replace it. Store kibble in an airtight container. Reason 5: Food change. Switching food brands or flavors abruptly can cause digestive upset and food refusal. Always transition gradually over 7 to 10 days, mixing increasing amounts of new food with decreasing amounts of old food. Reason 6: Treats and table scraps. If your dog fills up on treats, training rewards, and table scraps, they may refuse their regular meals because they are simply not hungry. Treats should make up no more than 10 percent of daily caloric intake.

Reason 7 to 9: Medical Causes

Reason 7: Dental problems. Broken teeth, infected gums, oral tumors, and mouth injuries make eating painful. Signs include drooling, dropping food, chewing on one side, or pawing at the mouth. Your vet can diagnose and treat dental issues. Reason 8: Gastrointestinal issues. Nausea, stomach inflammation, parasites, infections, and foreign body ingestion can all cause appetite loss. If your dog is also vomiting, has diarrhea, is lethargic, or has a bloated abdomen, see a vet promptly. Reason 9: Systemic illness. Kidney disease, liver disease, cancer, infections, and other systemic conditions frequently present with appetite loss as an early symptom. This is why persistent appetite loss (more than 48 hours) warrants veterinary evaluation.

Home Remedies to Try First

Warm the food slightly in the microwave for 10 seconds to release aromas. Add a tablespoon of low-sodium chicken broth to the food. Mix in a small amount of plain, unseasoned cooked chicken or boiled hamburger. Try feeding from your hand, which some dogs find more appealing. Ensure fresh water is always available because dehydration can suppress appetite. Try a different food bowl or feeding location. Remove the food after 15 minutes if not eaten and offer again at the next meal time. Exercise before meals often stimulates appetite. If none of these remedies work within 48 hours and your dog is showing any other symptoms like lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, or weight loss, schedule a veterinary appointment.

Pro Tips

โœ“Keep a food diary noting when your dog eats, how much, and any symptoms. This helps your vet diagnose the issue faster
โœ“Do not free-feed (leaving food out all day). Scheduled meals help you notice appetite changes immediately
โœ“Sudden loss of appetite in a dog that normally eats enthusiastically is more concerning than a dog that has always been picky
โœ“Some medications suppress appetite. If your dog recently started a new medication, check with your vet about appetite side effects

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I take my dog to the vet for not eating?

Take your dog to the vet if they have not eaten for more than 48 hours (24 hours for puppies), if appetite loss is accompanied by vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or weight loss, if you notice signs of pain when eating like drooling or dropping food, or if your dog is drinking significantly more or less water than usual.

Is it okay to give my dog human food if they wont eat dog food?

Plain, unseasoned cooked chicken, boiled hamburger, plain rice, and plain pumpkin (not pie filling) are safe for most dogs and can encourage eating during temporary appetite loss. However, this should not become a long-term feeding strategy because human food does not provide complete canine nutrition. If your dog consistently refuses dog food, consult a veterinarian or pet nutritionist.

Can anxiety cause a dog to stop eating?

Yes. Anxiety from separation, environmental changes, loud noises, or social stress can suppress appetite in dogs just as it does in humans. Anxious dogs may also show other signs like panting, pacing, hiding, destructive behavior, or excessive licking. If anxiety is the cause, the appetite typically returns within 2 to 3 days once the stressor is resolved.
