Common Causes
Stress, dental pain, hairballs, upper respiratory infection, dietary changes, or underlying illness. A cat that has not eaten in 24–48 hours needs veterinary evaluation.
When It Is an Emergency
See a vet immediately if not eaten for 48+ hours, vomiting, lethargic, difficulty breathing, or is overweight (risk of fatty liver disease within 2–3 days).
Home Remedies
Warm the food slightly to increase aroma. Try a different protein. Offer tuna water as an appetite stimulant. Make sure the bowl is clean and away from the litter box.
Gradual Food Transitions
Mix 25% new food with 75% old for 3 days, then 50/50 for 3 days, then 75/25 for 3 days. Sudden switches upset digestion.
