I always freeze when interviewers ask "Tell me about yourself." I never know if they want my life story or just work stuff. How should I answer this?
This is the most common interview question and most people overcomplicate it. Use the Present-Past-Future formula and keep it under 90 seconds. Present: Start with your current role and one key accomplishment. "I am currently a marketing coordinator at XYZ where I manage our social media channels and grew our Instagram engagement by 40% last quarter." Past: Briefly mention how you got here. "Before that, I worked in content creation at ABC where I developed my skills in analytics and campaign strategy." Future: Connect to why you are here. "Now I am looking to take the next step into a marketing manager role where I can lead a team and drive strategy, which is why this position excited me." That is it. Do not share personal details, do not go back to college unless it is specifically relevant, and do not recite your entire resume. The interviewer has your resume. What they want is a concise, confident summary that shows you are intentional about your career and genuinely interested in this specific role.
