Pothos (Devil’s Ivy)

The ultimate beginner plant. It grows in low light, high light, water, soil β€” nearly anywhere. Water when the soil is dry (every 1–2 weeks). It trails beautifully from a shelf or hanging basket. If you forget to water it for a month, it droops dramatically but perks right back up after a good drink.

Snake Plant (Sansevieria)

Tolerates low light and irregular watering like a champion. Water every 2–4 weeks. It actually prefers to be slightly neglected β€” overwatering is the main way to kill it. Great for bedrooms because it releases oxygen at night. Comes in many varieties from tall and narrow to short and wide.

ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas)

Thrives in low light and needs water only every 2–3 weeks. The thick, waxy leaves store water so it is very drought-tolerant. Grows slowly but steadily. It is practically indestructible and looks sleek and modern in any room.

Spider Plant

One of the easiest plants to keep alive and it produces adorable baby plants that dangle from the mother plant. Tolerates a range of conditions but prefers bright indirect light. Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Great for hanging baskets.

Rubber Plant

Bold, dark leaves that make a statement. Prefers bright indirect light but tolerates medium light. Water every 1–2 weeks. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth monthly to keep them glossy and help the plant photosynthesize. Can grow several feet tall over time.

Pro Tips

βœ“The number one killer of houseplants is overwatering, not underwatering
βœ“Always use pots with drainage holes β€” no plant likes sitting in water
βœ“Group plants together to create humidity that benefits tropical species
βœ“Most houseplants are toxic to cats and dogs β€” check the ASPCA database before buying
